Why Australia’s National Rugby League use Chameleon to make eLearning for their network of volunteer coaches, match officials, and players.

Rugby League is played by hundreds of thousands of children, teenagers, and adults in communities across Australia. Thousands of people give their time to coach these players every weekend. Eva Senior and her L&D team are responsible for training and developing these volunteers.

Chameleon Creator

NRL's drive to make their learning more engaging and effective led to them make the shift to Chameleon Creator. Providing a better experience to their learners.

New Education Initiatives for Coaches and Volunteers.

In 2024, the National Rugby League, the NRL, hit a major milestone, with 200,000 participants registered across Australia. Eva is the NRL’s National Education Manager, leading their learning and development team.

Eva came on board to align the NRL’s education programmes across the organisation and to ensure any future developments are evidence based and apply best practice design principles. With a background in sports pedagogies, she worked across tertiary education and national sporting organisations for about ten years, before moving to the NRL.

She says, “I'm passionate about sport and learning. My role at the NRL is perfect because it marries both. Our priority areas currently are educating coaches, trainers, and match officials, so we develop accreditation and compliance courses. Recently we've also begun developing programmes to provide volunteers extra knowledge in areas like child safety and how to support female athletes.”

"Chameleon provides more design flexibility and options for creativity. It’s fun to be able to play around with how we design our courses."

Making learning more fun and impactful

A big focus for Eva is making learning engaging. She says, “A lot of the training we create is accreditation and compliance, and we don’t want people to feel, “Oh no, I have to do another course.” So, the more fun and punchier the learning is, the better. We want volunteers to enjoy learning and walk away feeling they’ve learned something useful. I'm all about impact.”

Eva and her team were using Rise before moving to Chameleon. Their drive to make their learning more engaging and effective led to them making the shift. Eva explains. “We were after a fresh new look and feel for our learning, and Chameleon provides more design flexibility and options for creativity. It’s fun to be able to play around with how we design our courses.”

“My team likes having so many interaction components. It gives us more variety when we’re designing a course. For example, one of my colleagues is working up an interactive crossword puzzle for a new resource, and we haven’t been able to do that before.”

“Our learners are really liking the new look and the new interactions. We’re receiving more positive feedback from learners compared to our previous programmes. And for the first time we’re seeing comments on social media saying, we really love what the NRL is doing in the education space. It’s very motivating to get that type of feedback.”

Game changing learning features

We love it when L&D teams using Chameleon come up with new, creative applications for learning interactions. Eva ‘s team has tweaked Chameleon’s certificate function to create a reflective tool for their new high-performance coach course.

Eva explains, “We’ve embedded questions throughout the course that stimulate coaches to think about their own coaching philosophy. Then, at the end, they download a certificate that includes their responses to those questions and bring that to a workshop to continue those discussions. We're just trialling the new certificate now and it's working a treat.”

The other component Eva feels has been a real gamechanger is Chameleon’s Review Tool. She says, “It makes internal reviews a lot easier – I can supply slide-by-slide feedback to my team without having to take screenshots or describe edits at length.”

“We’ve also embedded feedback requests for learners at the end of the e-learning component of each course. Our programmes are generally blended, with an online component as well as face-to-face workshops. We used to send out learning surveys at the end of each season, and by then, people would've forgotten the details of what they’d learned. Now we're getting feedback straightaway, we know whether we’ve hit the mark with our e-learning, and we can make changes a lot quicker.”

Supporting female athletes

The NRL has just launched a resource on supporting female athletes. Eva says, “The women's game is growing, but rugby league is still a male dominated sport, and research tells us there are some distinct differences between female and male athletes. So, we want to help our coaches, trainers, players, and parents be mindful of that, and give them ideas for things they can do to create an environment that’s safe, fun, and inclusive for everybody.”

The new resource was launched in early July 2024, and it's been a real hit, with more than 600 people already completing the course.

Eva says, “We check in on the feedback coming through regularly. It’s so great seeing the course resonate with people. Coaches are saying they’re learning something new they can take away and use. And we’ve heard from women who’ve grown up in the game saying they’re familiar with most of the info, but it's been really valuable to reinforce that they’re on the right track. Comments like that make us really excited because we can see we’re making an impact. We’ve also had some requests for info specific to pathways and elite environments, so it’s good to know there’s a thirst for more knowledge and the potential to build on those resources.”

Developing Chameleon in partnership with L&D teams

Chameleon takes customer service seriously. Yes, we know every business in the world says that, so we get it if you just rolled your eyes. But we don’t care about customer service just because we’re good people. We’re also ambitious. We want to make the best learning tools out there, and we can’t do that without L&D teams telling us how we can make Chameleon better, and what you want your authoring, hosting, and analytics to do.

Eva agrees. “We love that Chameleon are continuing to develop their tool to make it better and better. And they’re clearly interested in doing that by listening to their customers. So, every time we have feedback, they're open to hearing what we'd like. I suggested a feature about a year ago, and now it exists.”

“I really appreciate the customer service side of things with Chameleon. Their customer service is outstanding. If we have any questions, we can give them a call, they're always available for a chat, and always happy to talk to the developers. They’ve even tested programmes for us and helped us iron out glitches.”

“A huge gamechanger for us was when Chameleon built an e-learning template with our NRL branding and imagery. They just did that for us to help out and it looks extremely professional and engaging. All we do now is duplicate that template and half the job's already done. It’s really accelerated the process of building a course. Thanks guys!”

Eva and her team have also been trialling Chameleon’s new analytics feature with their coach programme. Eva says, “We love it! We've had the opportunity to exchange some initial observations with Chameleon and we look forward to seeing this feature evolve as it will provide us rich insights into how our learners are engaging with the content and help inform how we design our programmes in the future.”
