Villa Maria
Villa Maria wanted a simple, speedy, all-in-one solution to create and host learning for their team
Life at one of New Zealand’s top wineries is never slow, so the Villa Maria crew need a quick, easy learning tool for busy people to use. We talk to them about how Chameleon fits the bill.
In 2020, Villa Maria began using Chameleon Creator and hosting to build and share learning with their team. Communications Executive Helena Coyne is responsible for learning content. She explains, “For a few years at Villa Maria everything was a bit ad hoc from a learning point of view. We used to have a learning hub, but it was out of date, and needed redeveloped.”
About Villa Maria
Villa Maria's 60 year journey at the forefront of New Zealand's wine industry has shaped the company as it stands today. Their extensive portfolio is one the most geographically and stylistically diverse and highly-awarded range of premium wines by any New Zealand producer, fuelling consumer adoration and success across the globe.
Creator & hosting
Villa Maria now use authoring and hosting all in one place. Making the journey of creation fast, easy and beautiful.
Retiring their bulky, expensive LMS
The learning hub Helena mentions was an archaic LMS. The Villa Maria team hated it, nobody used it, and it was sitting there costing them $60,000 a year. Their GM of HR decommissioned it, but they had no new solution lined up. When Susan Bradley came onboard as Culture & Capability Lead in 2019, it became her task to work out what Villa Maria needed to manage their learning material and find the right tool.
Chameleon Consultant Josh Webster recalls his conversations with Susan. “ During Vintage, Villa Maria employ over a hundred staff to help us in our vineyards and in our wineries and they all need induction and health and safety training. But neither Villa Maria’s old LMS or their HR system could share content with seasonal workers who don’t have a Villa Maria email address. So, they needed a simple hosting solution, to share learning with anyone, anywhere.”
“The Villa Maria team were also adamant they didn’t want another bulky LMS, because they’d had one and it hadn’t worked out. Their HR team are time poor, and have no design experience, so they need a learning tool that’s quick and easy to use.”
.
“You don't need much Chameleon training because it’s really intuitive to learn. You just jump on and use it. It's so easy. And if we need any help, the Chameleon support team are right there. Every time I’ve reached out, someone has always come straight back to me."
Making induction less manual
Because Villa Maria had no online learning for new team members, the induction process was very hands on. Helena recalls, “The site Managers would do a personal induction, walk everyone around, share a number of powerpoint decks (think DEATH by powerpoint) and give them a paper induction pack. It wasn’t ideal.”
“As a transitional solution we switched to a tool called Who’s on Location. We use it to manage contractors on location, but it has a simple learning tool built in. It's not the best tool, pretty basic, a bit like PowerPoint. But it was what we had, so we set up some modules for Vintage workers, and it was helpful as a stop gap. However, it’s not the most intuitive tool to use and after using it for a few years, I was really ready to switch to something better.”
“When Susan first showed me Chameleon it looked so cool. I love the design, it feels modern, fresh, and exciting. There are so many options for content layouts and interactions, the learning looks amazing, and I know that if I want something that isn’t there I could suggest it, and you’d probably be able to help. So, it's a really cool tool. I love it.”

“I also really like the Chameleon user community, the helpful learning modules and weekly meet ups. Chameleon feels really open, it’s got a nice vibe, like you’re here to share and help other companies with their learning and that’s really awesome.”

A new era of fresh, modern learning

Welcoming new people to the Villa Maria team
Villa Maria’s first learning cab off the rank was their new induction module. Helena explains, “We were keen to create something that looks cool, that’s easy for learners to use, and simple for us to update because our processes change every year. Our induction module is quite complex because there are so many parts to the business. We’ve our office, the vineyards, the wineries, and then operations like warehousing and bottling. And we need induction modules for both permanent staff and seasonal workers. So, we’ve created an induction tool kit.”
“We’ve a piece that gives people the history of the company. We cover health and safety. And then there’s practical info for our seasonal workers. We also have to customise info for each of our sites, as they’re all different and have their own rules, so Chameleon is great because we can easily duplicate a module and update it for each region.”
“Because there’s so much for people to learn, it’s good to split it up into bitesize modules, And the simple hosting is great because we can send info out before people start, and then solidify that learning when they arrive on site and put things into practice.”
Easy, intuitive, and makes learning look amazing
Villa Maria have been creating content in Chameleon for a couple of years, and the 2022 vintage was the first time they used the platform for induction for theirvintage crew. Helena says, “It's definitely been really popular with managers and the workers. Next we’re looking at modules for our team leaders, things like an intro to HR, and how they can support their team’s performance. Villa Maria was also recently acquired by Indevin and we’re in the middle of doing our values integration, so it'll be cool to do a module on that.”
“I'm all for tools which take learning to the next level, so I one hundred percent recommend Chameleon. It’s easy, it’s intuitive, the support’s good, and it makes learning look cool, so I’m really keen to keep using it.”
Try Chameleon for yourself
